-
- GENERAL INFORMATION
-
- To find out if your Video Card will work
- ----------------------------------------
- First, find the name of your video card. Then, refer to the
- List of Supported and Unsupported Cards in Section 6 of the
- Troubleshooting Guide to see if your card has any known issues.
- If your card or chipset is supported, check the section in
- the Troubleshooting Guide called 'Specific Video Issues' to
- see if your card has any known issues.
-
- If the game crashes upon entering a level
- -----------------------------------------
- If you crash to the desktop when you attempt to enter a
- level, this may be caused by your video card. You may have
- chosen a video resolution that is not supported by your card.
- This may be cause by DirectX falsely reporting the
- memory on your card.
-
- If the game crashes elsewhere during gameplay
- ---------------------------------------------
- Try going to The Phantom Menace directory and delete both the
- obi.ini file and any folder called "Cache" that may have been
- created in The Phantom Menace Directory.
-
-
- Task Switching is not recommended
- ---------------------------------
- We recommend that you do not task switch (pressing Alt-Tab,
- Ctrl-Esc, or the Windows key to access another program) while
- playing Star Wars: Episode I--The Phantom Menace. On some
- machine configurations, task switching can cause the game
- to lock-up or quit unexpectedly.
-
- Laptop Systems
- --------------
- While The Phantom Menace should work fine on most systems
- that meet the minimum hardware specifications, it has NOT
- been tested with laptop systems and therefore we can NOT
- assure compatibility.
-
- Due to the wide variety of hardware configurations that
- ship with today's laptop systems, it would be impossible
- to configure a game that would work with all of them.
- Many laptops are limited in their ability to be used as
- a gaming machine because of memory configurations, their
- microchannel architecture, port configurations (i.e.
- no place for a joystick) and sound systems primarily
- designed to be used with productivity software.
-
- Laptop systems will attempt to compress the traditional
- version of the standard 101-function keyboard (found on
- almost all desktop systems) into a much smaller key
- configuration. This is usually done by relying on
- multi-function keys that allow the user to assign
- different functions to the same key. Unfortunately,
- this has been known to cause problems with this game.
-
- OEM Features on Brand Name Machines
- -----------------------------------
- Many brand name computers come with a variety of
- features provided by the manufacturer, including special
- buttons on the keyboard or special functions assigned to
- buttons common to all keyboards. For example, on one
- machine with which we tested, the Pause key did not work
- because the machine's manufacturer had assigned that key
- to bring up a special menu on the desktop.
-

-
- PLAYING THE PHANTOM MENACE
-
- Character starts off spinning upon entering the game
- ----------------------------------------------------
- After the first level loads, if the room starts off spinning,
- check to see if you have a joystick attached. If so, make
- sure that the Z-AXIS (Throttle) is set to a neutral position.
- You can also disable the joystick by going into the Controller
- Options and toggle the Controller Enable option to Off.
-
- Character locked doing a particular move
- --------------------------------------------
- On some machines, we've seen the player character locked in
- a loop performing a move without having to hit any buttons. If
- this occurs, you can usually fix it by either hitting the
- button of the move that is being performed, or by going to the
- Options Screen and returning to the game.
-
- Tips and special moves
- ----------------------
- In addition to the normal moves of characters listed in the
- manual, the Jedi characters have additional "combo moves"
- initiated when hitting controls in a particular sequence.
-
- Tap ATTACK button lightly Overhead slash
- Hold FORWARD, tap then hold ATTACK Twirling saber attack
- JUMP then hold ATTACK Jumping spin attack
-
- Remember that you can both push and pull blocks with the USE
- command.
-
- ###############################################################
-
- THE OPTIONS SCREEN
-
- General Options
- ---------------
- QUICKSAVE
- Hitting F5 will automatically save your current location while
- overwriting any previous Quicksave you might have had. To load
- a Quicksave, go to Load Screen and select QuickSave at the top.
- NOTE: The QuickSave game does not appear in the Save Game
- screen.
-
- Screen Resolution
- -----------------
- The Phantom Menace defaults to a 640 x 480 screen resolution.
- If your 3D Card supports other resolutions, you can choose a
- higher resolution for a clearer in-game image. Not all
- resolutions supported by your particular 3D Card will be
- available in the game. NOTE: Higher resolutions often
- result in slower game performance.
-
- Performance Options
- -------------------
- If you feel game performance is slow, go to the Options Menu
- and try selecting a lower Computer Rating.
-
- There are additional Performance Options not listed on the
- Options Screen which can not be toggled on/off independently;
- they can only be changed when adjusting the Computer Rating.
- These options include:
-
- Camera angle: On the Low setting, camera angles may be
- slightly higher than on other settings.
- Artifacts: Determines how long debris and bodies remain
- onscreen
-
- Sound Options
- -------------
- VOLUME SLIDERS
- This Music volume slider adjusts both music and ambient sound
- effects volume. The Sfx Volume slider effects other sound
- effects and voice volume.
-
- SFX DISABLED
- If you have SFX disabled, the "Dialog voice on" option under
- General Options is automatically set to off and can not
- turned on without re-enabling SFX.
-
- SELECTING A SOUND PROVIDER
- The Phantom Menace currently supports the following 3-D Sound
- Providers:
-
- Aureal A3D Interactive
- Microsoft DirectSound3D hardware support
- Microsoft DirectSound3D software support
- Dolby Surround
- Mile 2D Fast Stereo Positional Audio
-
- To select a provider, double click the name of the provider
- you wish to select. The Phantom Menace will then detect whether
- the sound provider is supported by your system.
-
- Keyboard Controls
- -----------------
- 8 and 2 on the NUMPAD do not allow you to scroll through
- dialogue choices. To do this, use the Up/Down Arrow keys.
-
- The BACKSPACE key is not configurable.
-
- Edit Control Notes
- ------------------
- Please note that while Game Controllers may have up to
- two commands bound to a single control, Keyboard Controls
- can only be bound to a single command.
-
- When binding a move command to an axis (ie the Z-axis) on a
- joystick, the opposite move is automatically bound to the
- opposite axis.
-
- Example: If you bind the +Z Axis to move forward, the
- -Z Axis is automatically bound to move
- backward.
-
-
- Game Controllers
- ----------------
- Although The Phantom Menace offers joystick support, we suggest
- using a gamepad or keyboard controls for the optimal gaming
- experience.
